I have never written to a Web Site before, but being a relative newcomer to the world of I.T, I am just beginning to find my way about, and in so doing I came across this 50plusclub.
Do I have a go, I asked myself? What are they looking for? Am I too old? Do I even know what to say, or how to say it? Clever folk these IT blokes, hard for a beginner to understand sometimes. Still I am further on than most and with some possible contacts with people at the same stage as I, and then we may be able to help each other, methinks. So, Have a Go I said to myself.
I don’t want to be in the Grumpy old Men/Woman category, and at this stage I don’t want to rant, although there is no guarantee that this will not come later.
I am a widow, over 50….well over, one might say. Over the hill? Never, I am at the top of it, and the grass is green and the wild flowers are in bloom, the multi-coloured butterflies are dancing around; the bees are buzzing….and I am flipping well freezing up here…what happened to warm spring days eh?
Well I have two fine sons, four beautiful grandchildren and am in good health, so I will be off home to my cosy little bungalow for a nice hot ‘cuppa’.
So any novices out there who fancy a cheery chat, or any plain simple advice that one learner can give to another, why not get in touch. We might be able to help one another without those high tec wiz kids blinding us with science and looking at us pityingly when we don’t understand them.
First of all welcome to the site! The 50+ is aimed at everyone over 50 but we would not exclude anyone on the basis of age. After all, everyone potentially has something that may be of interest and being over 50 does not mean we have no interest in anything younger people might want to contribute.
We encourage anyone to ‘have a go’ and you’re never too old to make comments. You may feel you don’t want to be classed as a ‘grumpy old woman’ but from the recent television show of the same name there were many comments that would strike a chord with a great many people. One of these was the apparent invisibility of our age group yet we have annual spending power equating to around £150 billion!
Also, some 70% of people over 50 have e-mail and Internet access and use it to keep in touch with families that are often spread around the globe. Blog sites (like this one) enable us to make our comments felt or, at the very least, we feel better just by being able to put them down in print.
Yes, the IT guys can be a bit off-puting with all the jargon etc. but here you could help others cut through this ‘techno-babble’ and/or enable some form of self help.
On that note, if there is anything on this site that you think could be simplified then please do write and we’ll see what we can do.
The main thing, though, is that your comments keep coming…
Hello Sheila, You sound like a very cheery person who enjoys life to the full. Like you, I am also in my Autumn years and new to the world of computers. I feel priveleged to be part of this new age of technology and if I had one wish it would be to have a glimpse of the future to see just how advanced this world can get. I am only a learner but I am enjoying every moment that I spend on my pc. A friend gave me this website otherwise I would not have known how to find it on my own. I have a lot to learn yet. Perhaps you would have some tips for me.
Jean.
Hi Jean, thank you for the quick response,I thought I was going to be on my own on this site. Have had some fun fiddling around on it and I hope you do too. Have you any idea if it is possible to delete files from the hard disk…not that I have anything naughty on but I was just curious as to how criminals get caught when they have deleted their nasties and emptied the recycle bin.
Hello Sheila, Your question is a bit too technical for me. I know that all the files are in C drive. But you would have to know which files you wanted to delete. I should be careful though. Unless you know what you are doing you could delete something important. I have just learned how to use some software called ‘picture it’. Its fascinating. You can alter photos to suit.Eg: lighten or darken them and add little inserts. There is also an album where you can put all your pictures. I have a little digital camera. I take it with me whenever I go out. I will inquire about the hard disk for you from the man next door. He knows everything.
Hi,
I’m one of those IT people so I think I can answer your question Sheila. When you tell the system to delete files on your computer the don’t actually get deleted straight away. What happens is the system marks them for deletion and makes the space they used available for other files. As you add more files (or change existing ones) this space gets used up and it is at this time that the old information is overwritten.
So, if you catch a criminal before all the nasties have been overwritten then it’s quite easy to get stuff ‘undeleted’. And, with some clever software, you can often get stuff back even after it has been overwritten as there are always traces of old files left behind.
As for what you can and can’t delete I suggest you either put all your stuff in My Documents or better still, create one or more directories on the C: drive to keep all your stuff in. That way you’ll know where all the stuff you can delete is.
Thanks Paul…I think this website is going to prove to be very useful in the future. I shall have a go at that.
Hello Jean, I also have the ‘Picture it’ software and find it great fun to play around with. I still get a bit angry when I cant get the stack file up and I know it results in unsaved pix…it will just be some small stupid move I am missing out…(another senior moment I suppose) I am interested in any software to do with photographs, but some I have come across are nowhere as near as good as the one we are already using.
Hi Sheila,
Well we are picking up some useful bits and pieces now. I dont know why I didn’t think of looking up these websites before. Its great to be able to discuss my pc with others like yourself as my husband does not share my interest. Do you have any software from Hallmark, the card people? If you have then I can tell you how you can expand on the picture it programme. Have a nice day.
Hello Jean I have been a busy lately so apologise for the delay. Yes I do have the Hallmark Card Programme but feel that there is a lot more I could do with it especially regarding inserts from file. so would welcome any tips. I am busy trying to write a novel at present, do you ever dabble in that direction?
